Scope and Contents

The original scope of The Viatorian News was a news and vocation bulletin. This publication was mailed each month during the ten months of the school year. It was also mailed to the libraries of all of the Catholic high schools in the United States, to the alumni of our schools and to the priests of the archdiocese of Chicago and the adjoining dioceses.1 Today it is the internal or in- house newsletter for the members of the Viatorian Community. The series began in March 1949 and terminated in June 1957. At first it was an 8 page 6" x 9" brochure, then the format was changed in October 1951 to a 4 page 8.5" x 11" folder. In October of 1959, a Provincial Residence Newsletter was published "for private circulation only." It was typewritten and each only a page long covering the news of a week or two. These were bound together into orange hard-covered books through October 1972. Individuals copies were published until May 1974. (#1-518) In June 1974, the format changed again, this time with a letterhead banner "Viatorian Newsletter" designed by Fr. Raymund Novacek, CSV. It was one to two pages long. ( #519-586) For the entire year of 1982, the banner just read: Newsletter Province of Chicago 1882-1982 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Province. (#587-597). Starting in 1983, it was called the Viatorian Newsletter and the banner became a pinkish brown in color later in that year. The rest of the newsletter was still in black and white. This look remained until 2002. (##598-724) Note: missing April 2002 #725 In May 2002, the newsletter was called Viator - Chicago and last only one year - until June 2003. It was all in black and white. (#726- 733) A new look and header appeared in Oct 2003. Now called Viatorian: Educators of Faith with the crown of thorns logo, the newsletter was published with color photographs and graphics, as well as a Spanish edition. The numbered system was abandoned at this time. Starting with the Aug 2004 issue, the banner had a new logo - the cross with Viatorians: Adoretur et Ametur Jesus and a faded partial crown of thorns. It was called Newsletter for the Chicago Province. This remained the design until July 2012. Starting in October 2012, the same Cross logo was used the header was just slightly different with a name: newsletter Province of Chicago.
